1. Do you offer a written contract?
Yes. A written contract is used for all Soundsations DJ services.
2. May we meet with you in person before we sign a contract?
Yes. If you are in the Edmonton area I will meet with you and answer any questions before
booking.
3. How much of a deposit is required for securing a booking?
We require a deposit of 25% of your total booking cost with the balance due on the event
date.
4. How long has our DJ been in the business and how many weddings have they done?
Soundsations is owned and operated by Chris Humphrys. Chris has over 17 years of Dj'ing
experience and has performed at hundreds of weddings and other functions.
5. How many weddings do you do each year?
About 35 to 40.
6. How many other types of events do you do per year?
About 20 to 30.
7. Do you perform for more than one event in a day?
Not for weddings. I sometimes will have two school dances in one day.
8. What makes you different from your competitors?
Soundsations offers the advantage of experience & professionalism. Dj'ing is something a lot
of people try, but not too many stick with it for very long. Soundsations' experience
and commitment to make your event special are what set us apart.
9. How much space do you require for your set-up and where do you prefer to set-up?
As long as there are reasonably close power outlets and I am not too far from the dance
floor, there's no problem. We only need enough space for a 6-foot table and a few feet
on either side for speakers.
10. Will you make announcements?
We can make any announcements you require including introducing speakers bridal party
entrance, cake cutting, bouquet & garter, dedications, etc.
11. What is your level of audience interaction?
Soundsations DJ interaction level is adjusted to the tastes and comfort level of the
bride & groom and guests. Not every audience is comfortable with games and contests that many
Dj's play. Sometimes it is not appropriate for the event either. Soundsations will find out
what level of interaction you are looking for by meeting and talking with you. We will also
judge from the audience at your event what level of interaction is called for.
12. What if something happens to you and you can’t make it to the wedding? Would there be a
backup service?
As per the contract, Soundsations is responsible to find another experienced DJ to cover your
event in such a case.
13. Will we meet again before the wedding? Or will you be available to contact regarding song
requests of any other details to customize our event?
We definitely can meet. Things can get hectic when planning a big event like a wedding, so
often couples often don't have time to meet and we get details through phone calls and
emails. I am always willing to meet with you though.
14. Can we visit you at a performance?
No. A professional DJ should be giving 100 percent of their attention to the function they
have been hired to perform at. If I am side-tracked talking with another potential customer
and trying to give them a sales pitch at your wedding or event, I am not being very
professional. Would you want strangers coming to check out your function and taking up the
DJ's time and attention. Probably not.
15. May we contact any of your references?
I have had to stop giving out contact info for my references. I get so many inquiries now
that people that had agreed to act as references were getting called or emailed on an almost
daily basis. Understandably this is too much to ask of anyone. This is why I have a
testimonials page. All the testimonials are word for word genuine unsolicited feedback
from Soundsations customers.
16. How do you keep your music collection up-to-date?
Soundsations subscriptions to monthly compilations marketed specifically for DJ's. We have
all the latest hits with clean edits (no swears or inappropriate language).
17. How involved can we be in selecting music for our event? Can we send you requests prior
to the event so you can ensure that you have those songs?
Yes. You are welcome to customize the music to any extent you wish.
18. When do we need to submit our music requests and event details?
It is helpful to have all music requests at least 2 weeks before your event.
19. Do you take requests from our guests?
Yes requests are encouraged and are an important factor in determining what the audience
wants to hear.
20. Can we submit a “Do Not Play” list?
Yes. We only caution that most weddings are composed of a very mixed audience in terms of
music preferences. Keep in mind that there is probably going to be guests of all different
ages musical tastes and what you tell the DJ not to play may be something guests will request.
21. When do you arrive to set up for our wedding? How much time do you require to set up?
We like to begin setting up about 1 1/2 hours before guests arrive.
22. What will you wear to our wedding?
Unless otherwise instructed the DJ will wear dress pants, dress shirt, jacket, dress shoes.
23. How much of a deposit is required to secure our date?
Soundsations requires a 25% deposit to secure a booking.
24. What is your cancellation policy?
We require 90 days cancellation notice in writing by regular mail or e-mail or the full
balance becomes due. This is because once we commit to your date we generally are turning
away other clients for that date. Weddings tend to book up to a year or more in advance.
With less than 90 days notice it is highly unlikely we can rebook your date with another
customer. Deposits are a retainer fee and are non-refundable.
25. How much would you charge for overtime?
Soundsations charges $150 per hour for overtime (or $75 per half hour). Overtime must be
approved by the venue management as well as the customer and must be paid in cash to the
DJ in advance.

26. Do you require a meal?
Yes, we ask that the DJ be included in the meal because by dinner time the DJ has usually
been working for about 5 hours already (loading up equipment, setting up, playing cocktail
music etc.).
27. Are you insured?
Yes. We carry full liability insurance.
28. Do you take any breaks?
No. Not unless you schedule a break in your event.
29. What is your policy on alcohol or smoking during the wedding?
Soundsations will not smoke at any event. Occasionally guests will offer the DJ drinks at
events. In such cases the DJ may accept within moderation. We can't have more than one or two
drinks because we have to have a clear head to run the dance and deal with your guests
professionally.
30. What kind of equipment do you use?
Soundsations only uses professional audio and lighting equipment. Professional mobile DJ
equipment is made to stand up to the wear and tear of frequent use and transport and
generally have a much higher output level than would be found in consumer marketed equipment.
31. Do you bring backup equipment with you to the wedding?
Yes. If any equipment should happen to fail at an event it would probably not even be noticed
by the audience. In the worst case it would take only a few minutes to swap in a replacement.
32. Do you set up a sign or banner with your equipment?
No.
33. Do you belong to any professional associations or trade groups?
Soundsations belongs to The Edmonton Musicians Association.
34. Can we use the DJ's microphone and sound system for our speeches and toasts?
Yes. It is often more advisable though to use the venues PA system for this if they have one.
This is because most venues will have the speakers distributed evenly throughout the room
(usually in the ceiling) so that everybody in the audience will be able to hear the speaker.
With the DJ's system all the sound will be coming from one area in the room. It can
definitely be turned loud enough for everyone to hear it, but it may seem very loud to those
seated closest to the DJ speakers.
35. Can we run audio for our slide show or power point presentation through the DJ sound
system?
Yes. As long as the computer or DVD player running the presentation is within about 50 feet
or less from the DJ's soundboard we can patch in the audio to run through our sound system.
Keep in mind the quality of the sound will depend on the source. Also there should be a clear
path from the DJ table to the source computer so that the audio cable doesn’t have to be
snaked around and under guest tables.
36. What forms of payment do you accept?
Soundsations accepts cash, cheques, or credit cards. Credit cards are processed through
PayPal. For credit card payments an invoice is emailed to you via PayPal. You then enter
your credit card information on the PayPal secure site (no PayPal account is required) to
complete your payment.
37. How far will you travel?
Soundsations has travelled all over Alberta. Travel charges are $1.50 per Km. The first 50 Km.
are free. If travel takes more than 2 hours from Edmonton we may also bill for accomadations.
38. Can we provide our own music for you to play?
Yes. We recommend you check with us first to see if we already have the music in our library.
If you want to provide music it should be on CD. Try and make sure the quality of the
recording is acceptable. A poor quality recording will sound really bad through a powerful
professional PA system and the audience will blame the DJ.
39. Can we play music from an ipod or iphone through your system?
You can, but we recommend that you don't. The output from these devices tend to sound bad
through professional gear. We often have guests ask if we can play their favourite song off
their ipod or iphone. If by chance we don't already have the song in our library, we will
always check with the customer (ie. The bride or groom) for approval on this.
40. Can we have a musician run an instrument through your system?
Soundsations uses mixing boards designed for DJ use. They are designed to accept line level
inputs from sources such as CD players and computer audio. We cannot accept outputs from
instruments such as electric guitars. We can accept an acoustic guitar with pick-ups through
one of our microphone inputs. Please talk to us in advance about any such requirements.
41. Can you download a song at a dance if you don't have it already?
Technically we can but we are not licensed to play it.
42. What if we don't need dinner or cocktail music and we only need the DJ for the dance?
Then we will negotiate a reduced rate based on how long you require our service. It will
depend on how early you need us to be set up, what time you need music to start and how
long you need music for.
43. Can you provide a screen and projector for video presentations?
Yes. If you have booked our DJ services we can provide a screen and projector for $150
additional fee. If your venue has a screen and you only need a projector, there is a $75
additional charge.
44. What times do your services start and end?
Our standard wedding contract specifies 8 hours of service. Most often this covers from 5 pm
to 1 am. For most hotel banquet facilities in the Edmonton area 1 am is the time they will
allow music to be played until. If you require an earlier start or later finish we are
flexible. If your start or end time is significantly different we will negotiate a reasonable
additional charge.
45. Will you provide music for our wedding ceremony?
Yes. If your ceremony is at the same location as your reception and does not require us to be
set-up more than an hour earlier there is a small additional cost. For earlier starting
ceremonies and / or ceremony and reception in different locations there is an additional
charge. Please talk to us about your requirements and we will quote you a price.
